Blustery conditions greeted the BSN Benjis for the much anticipated 2019 District Championships in Delft.  Twenty six BSN players were in action, with BSN1 selected on merit from second year players and BSN2 selected on merit from first years.  Both BSN teams dominated in their respective groups; they were impressive in attack and defence and they won all six of their matches.  This setup the intriguing prospect of an all BSN semi-final as winners of groups C &D (and also an all HRC semi-final as they won groups A&B).

The first half of the semi-final was hands down the best rugby that the Benjis have played all year.  After a frantic start, the first years took a 1-0 lead when Kealan scored, which poured proverbial petrol on the fire.  The line speed, the tackles, the energy in the ruck and maul was impressive to watch, and eventually BSN1 crossed the line through the speed of Thom on the wing.  That made it 1-1 at halftime, with both teams blowing hard.  It would have been difficult to imagine a second half at the same intensity, and the extra experience, size and strength of the second years started to help them find opportunities to score;  Thom picked up 2 trys on the wing, and Joseph and Lars both scored by driving with the ball through the middle.  It was a physically and mentally exhausting match that finished 5-1 to BSN1.  The big brothers won, but not before the only-slightly-smaller-brothers had left them with a bloodied nose!

Both BSN teams then faced HRC teams in the tournament final and 3rd place playoff.  After that semi-final, the final match was a bridge too far and HRC won both, which meant BSN1 & 2 finished second and fourth respectively.  It was a fantastic performance from the whole team and the players can be rightly proud of a great day of rugby!

What amazing teams we had. Both teams could have won their last games. Our 1sts didn’t get on a roll and start scoring but we’ll do them in the finals. Yes the ref. was very poor and bias. You can even see her in the photo above trying to trip Thom up.

    Nice report Chris.
